Between the lines: Australian artists and war

Between the lines: Australian artists and war draws from the Gallery’s collection of paintings, sculptures, drawings, photographs and decorative arts to explore the experiences of war on the battle front and at home. The display looks at the many ‘lines’ of battle experienced during the First World War by Australian artists including Hans Heysen, Frank Hurley, Hilda Rix Nicholas and Arthur Streeton. Discover subjects as diverse as the destroyed and lonely ruins of European cities through to the tranquil Australian landscapes that were created as counterpoints to a tumultuous world at war.

Between the lines is part of the Flanders Fields Poppy Trail, commemorating Australian, French and Belgian allies during WW1 and one of the major highlights of Creative France South Australia.

The exhibition is now showing in Gallery 3c of the Art Gallery of South Australia in Adelaide. Admission is free of charge. The Gallery is open from 10am until 5pm daily.
