Professor Samir Zard visits Australia to deliver two prestigious lectures

Professor Samir Z. ZARD has been invited to deliver both the 2015 Arthur Birch Lecture at the Australian National University in Canberra and the 2015 Liversidge Lecture at the University of Sydney. Only one other Frenchman has received such an honour: Professor Jean-Marie Lehn (Nobel Prize winner for Chemistry in 1987).

The Birch Lecture will be held at the Australian National University on Tuesday 2 June, 4:00-5:00pm - Building #35, Old RSC Lecture Theatre.

The Liversidge Lecture will be held at the University of Sydney on Wednesday 3 June, 5:30-6:30pm - Chemistry LT2, Level 1.

Professeur Zard will give two other conferences at the Australian National University during his stay:

- On Thursday 4 June, 4:00-5:00pm - Building #138, Seminar Room 3.105
- On Friday 5 June, 11:00am-12:00pm - Building #138, Seminar Room 3.105

Biography

 Samir Z. Zard currently holds the positions of “Director of Research” (Exceptional Class) in the C. N. R. S. (Centre National de la Recherche  Scientifique) and part-time Professor at Ecole Polytechnique. He is also the acting Regional Editor for Tetrahedron Letters for part of Europe.

 Professor Zard was born in 1955 in Ife, Nigeria. His training as a chemist started at the American University of Beirut (interrupted by the civil  war in 1975), then at Imperial College, London, and finally at the l’Institut de Chimie des Substances Naturelles à Gif-sur-Yvette, France,  where he received his doctorate under the supervision of Professor Sir Derek Barton in 1983.

 His main research concerns the study and development of new reactions and processes. He is the author of 330 scientific publications, 37  filed patents, and two books. In addition to a number of academic awards, he received in 2007 the Croix de Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur.
