Overview

The Lycée Guébré-Mariam was established by the Mission laïque française in 1947. At the time France took back the concession of railroad between Djibouti and Addis Ababa, thus several children's generations of French and Ethiopian railroad employees were sent to the Lycée until the eighties.

The Lycée Guébré-Mariam is situated at the heart of Addis Ababa. Its 9000 m2 of constructions extend over four and a half hectares granted by the Ethiopian authorities.

French-Ethiopian establishment with international vocation, it accompanied the installation of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa  and the African Union in Addis Ababa. Known in all over the country - the word "high school" passed in the Amharic language - it has a triple vocation: educate French children, contribute to the formation of the Ethiopian elite and educate foreigners, mostly French-speaking. These missions impose a high quality standard and the respect for founders' values: open-mindedness, solidarity, dialogue between cultures and secularity.

Involving pupils of about fifty different nationalities, the Lycée Guébré-Mariam educate children of the numerous embassies of the diplomatic capital of Africa, of staffs of United Nations, the African Union, the European Delegation, French companies (Total, Sofrecom) or Ethiopian ( Ethiopian Airlines), of international organizations and finally of state employees, academics and Ethiopian traders.

Ethiopia supports the establishment lending the land, France supplies teaching and direction staffs by the channelof the Agency for French Education Abroad (50 people currently).

Today the Lycée Guébré-Mariam welcomes 1800 pupils, it is approved from the first year of nursery school to the final year of high school (options: Economic and Social, Litterature and Scientific) by the French Ministry of Education and is authorized by the AEFE (Agency for French Education Abroad).
