A SERIE OF MALAYSIAN WOMEN PORTRAITS
Totem is a series of photographic portraits in black & white and colour taken with an 8x10 inch view
camera.
Diana Lui, a Franco-Belgian artist of Malaysian origin, has created this exhibition of photographs for
the 2015 George Town Festival in Penang. After Kuala Lumpur, this exhibition will be presented in
Singapore by the Alliance Française.
Totem presents portraits of Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo’s women wearing traditional costumes.
TWO EXHIBITIONS WHICH QUESTION THE VISITOR ABOUT THE WOMEN IDENTITIES
“The Essential Veil” series created between 2009 and 2011 in Morocco is a perfect complement to
this exhibition. Both series of photographs question the visitor to think about the notion of identity
in a 21st global and inter-connected century through the links between traditional and modern
beliefs.
A talk with the artist followed by a panel discussion about women status in Malaysia today will take
place on Thursday 1st October at 7:30pm at the Alliance Française de Kuala Lumpur (Lorong Gurney)
