Alumni Story : Nahruma Mehzabeen Pieu - Participant of Indo-French collaborative program in the field of oceanography

This year, I participated in an internship program to visit the Indo-French Cell for Water Sciences (IFCWS) at Indian Institute of Science (IISc). The internship program took place under an Indo-French collaborative program in the field of oceanography in order to strengthen the exchanges of expertise between Bangladesh, India and France in the field of oceanography. My stay to Bangalore has been the single most adventurous and educational experience in my entire life, no exaggeration. During the whole period of my residence at IISc from 15th June to 15th July I learned something new each day.  I learned one of the leading and advanced coastal modeling software, SCHISM, with the best teacher. Dr. Yann Krien was very patient and very good with explanation.

We were trying to simulate cyclone Fani and see how water level near the coast was affected by tide, wind and wave forcing. The external wave forcing outside the Bay of Bengal had more effect on the surge according to the Buoy comparisons but there are more parameters and equations that I would like to test to understand the cyclone Fani’s characteristic surge level. I also learned a little bit of programming on Rstudio as it was one of the demands of working through the software.

The SHCISM model is flexible, robust and diverse. I would like to work on coastal modeling and storm surge, climate and sea level rise in the near future for my further studies as well. The people at IFCWS were very encouraging and helpful. This experience has been exactly that for me. I want to pursue my studies in coastal and ocean modeling. I have so much more to learn. My sincerest gratitude to Stéphane Calmant and A.K.M. Saiful Islam for recommending me for this incredible experience. Lastly, I am profoundly thankful to the French Embassy for funding my travel and living expenses for my visit to IISc.
