More research on maths stressed

Mathematicians and teachers were called on to carry out more research on mathematics to ease the development of the country and to strengthen the base of knowledge in society.

Academicians, researchers and dignitaries gave the call during the opening ceremony of a 12day international workshop titled ‘dynamical systems and its applications to biology’ at AF Mujibur Rahman Ganit Bhaban in Dhaka University on Monday.

University vice-chancellor Md Akhtaruzzaman launched the event, while mathematics department chairman Amal Krishna Halder presided over the inaugural session and deputy minister for education Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury addressed the programme as the chief guest.

DU Mathematics department, International Centre for Pure and Applied Mathematics (CIMPA) and AF Mujibur Rahman Foundation jointly organised the event. New Age was the media partner of the programme.

French ambassador in Dhaka Marie Annick Bourdin, CIMPA representatives Renaud Leplaideur and Lidia Fernandez Rodriguez and AF Mujibur Rahman Foundation trustee M Nurul Alam addressed the programme as the special guests.

Addressing the function, Mohibul Hasan Chowdhoury called on mathematicians to do more research and increase the use of maths in other sectors as it would be the foundation of achieving the goal of ‘Digital Bangladesh.’

VC Akhtaruzzaman said that mathematics is known as the mother of science and it was very important to develop scientific research on maths to encourage the country’s young mathematicians.

French ambassador Marie Annick Bourdin stressed the need for undertaking joint collaborative academic and research programmes among Dhaka University and other renowned universities around the world to resolve the burning problems of society.

Around 55 teachers and researchers from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Nepal, China, Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Egypt and Malaysia are participating in the workshop.

Seven leading specialists from France, Germany, Brazil, Spain and Austria will deliver lectures in the workshop.

On June 21, closing ceremony of the event will be attended by University Grants Commission chairman Kazi Shahidullah, organisers said.
