1. Bach Studies: I Fall, I Flow, I Melt

The translation of music into movements.

Bach Studies is the latest full evening work from L.A. Dance Project’s Artistic Director, Benjamin Millepied. Inspired by the depth and complexity of Johann Sebastian Bach’s music, Millepied explores the Partita for Violin No. 2 in D Minor by applying the compositional techniques of counterpoint, fugue, and canon to choreography. Featuring costumes by long-time LADP collaborator, Alessandro Sartori, Bach Studies masterfully translates music into movement, resulting in a work that is at once technically sophisticated, delicate and emotionally compelling.

Founded in 2012 by Benjamin Millepied – L.A. Dance Project is comprised of an internationally acclaimed dance company, a performance venue in LA’s Arts District, and a series of new media initiatives.

Invitation to the voyage takes us on a journey through music, poetry and painting. The programme begins with the Sinfonietta for String Orchestra Op. 52 by French composer Albert Roussel, who was a sailor-turned-composer. The sea was the constant inspiration for most of his works and appears to be an epic theme in Sinfonietta.

The programme presents a selection of the most beautiful melodies composed by Berlioz in honour of the 150th anniversary of his death sang by infamous French mezzo soprano Aurore Ugolin. While Philippe Hersant's Patmos for string orchestra takes us to the Greek Island where St John the Baptist wrote the Apocalyps.

The composer Edith Canat de Chizy gained inspiration from painter Nicholas de Stael's tragic destiny and his discovery of the colours, atmospheres and lights of Northern Europe, Provence and North Africa. Eric Genovese, a member of the celebrated Comedie-Française, will read excerpts from the painter's correspondence, while some of de Stael's most celebrated paintings are projected on stage above the orchestra.

Led by Fouad Boussouf, Massala Dance Company presents Näss(People), an original ensemble piece exploring the cross-cultural influences of North African dance and contemporary hip hop.
First you will hear the rhythm, immemorial and haunting. On these beats, seven male dancers come together, mixing hip hop and traditional dance patterns. Näss(people)’s powerful communion takes you to the streets of Morocco where modernity and traditions meet which makes the hip hop dance unique.

Acrobatics, rotations of continuous heads, and physical power, these are the spectacular movements that let dancers push and pull, tug and heave, spin and flip, spring and collapse, in a rhythmic odyssey that draws audiences into a vibrant adventure of dance fusion that is at the same time modern and fundamentally anchored in the traditions of Moroccan society.
