Become a Language Teaching Assistant in in Metropolitan France and Overseas Departments for 2017-2018!

Applications for the 2017-2018 Language Teaching Assistant Program in Metropolitan France and its Overseas Departments have now been extended to Monday January 23!This is a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in French culture, perfect your language skills, and gain professional experience.

Introduction

This program is aimed at students who intend to become French or English language teachers, with little to no teaching experience. It is not aimed at experienced teachers.

This program is also open to students of all disciplines who can demonstrate a competence in French, and who are seeking to increase their linguistic and cultural proficiency.

In their applications, candidates are given the opportunity to express their preferred geographical location and level of teaching (primary or secondary).

Positions available

About 50 positions are offered to Australian nationals.

Eligibility criteria

  • Candidates must be Australian citizens. Permanent residents are not eligible.
  • Candidates must be between 20 and 35 years of age at the time of taking up their positions (from 1 October 2017).
  • Candidates must have completed their secondary education and university studies in Australia.
  • Candidates must be enrolled at an Australian university at the time of application. Candidates must have completed at least two years of university studies.
  • A minimum Level B1 in French is required (see the Cadre européen commun de références pour les langues).
  • Candidates must be native English speakers.
  • Candidates should preferably be single, as the salary of an assistant is not adequate to support dependents.
  • Candidates must submit a National Police Check no older than three months.

Contract

Candidates can request the age group that they would prefer to work with. Although every effort will be made to accommodate these requests, the French authorities CANNOT guarantee preferred placement. Please be aware that you may be placed in more than one school in your region.

Primary School

  • A seven month contract from October 1 2017 until April 30 2018.
  • A 12 hour per week schedule.
  • Working with children aged 8 to 11.
  • The assistant will be expected to organise oral expression activities on their own with small groups of students or to work alongside the supervising teacher with the whole class.

Secondary School (junior high school or high school)

  • A seven month contract from October 1 2017 until April 30 2018.
  • A 12 hour per week schedule.
  • Working with students aged 11 to 18.
  • The assistant will be expected to organise oral expression activities on their own with small groups of students or to work alongside the supervising teacher with the whole class.

Gross monthly allowance: €964.88
Net monthly allowance: around €795

Role of the Assistant

Tasks to be carried out by the assistant include:

  • Providing help in the classroom in oral and written English with small groups of students for 12 hours per week. The assistant’s timetable may be shared between two schools.
  • Providing linguistic and cultural assistance to teachers.
  • Making recordings on tape for the audio-visual resources of the school’s library.
