Nigerian Music in France

From Afrobeat invented by Fela, to the suave voice of Nnekka, not forgetting the naija rhythms offered by P-Square, Nigerian music is recognized throughout the world including in France!

Because of its diversity, originality and let’s say it, craziness, Nigerian music has progressively won the hearts of Frenchies who dances every weekend on these rhythms.

Nigerian music has become famous in France recently after several year of ignorance. We all remember now the duo between P-Square and Matt Houston in 2012 or the French version of Yemi Alade’s song Johnny, even though at the time the French population had no idea it was inspired by a Nigerian artist.

But beyond the quality of the music, it is important to highlight the commitment of these artists who sing and dance their country.

How can we ignore the story of Fela, the father of afrobeats, a mix of Yoruba traditional rhythms, highlife, jazz and funk? Arrested nearly 200 times in his life, imprisoned, beaten up, nothing has ever stopped the “Black President” who fought for over 30 years the abuses of the dictatorship, of its injustices and corruption.

More recently the music industry has discovered Nnekka, a young woman who left Nigeria to sing the violence that hurts her country “so many lives have been taken. So many people have died. I do not understand” she says. All of that to instaure the charia ? Even Mahomet would not understand. I would not want to see all this blood poured.

These two artists are only an example of all of these artists who enchanter the French musical arena. Ok we can’t resist to offer you this small moment of joy.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ivg3J3h5Ps
