For the first time in our Newsletter, we present to you two Alumni from Paris School of Economics who did their Masters together and now work at the World Bank in Paris and Washington DC respectively.

Q: What led you to choose France as your study destination?

A: We never considered applying abroad but coming across the coursework at Paris School of Economics and how easy the application process was, we thought of giving it a shot. As luck would have it, both of us got in together. While it was not our most obvious choice, we believe we didn’t choose France but France chose us.

Q: What was your experience like in France?

A: Within a span of a few months, our lives had changed and we were taking our flights to Paris to join the Paris School of Economics. Now that we think about it, our inclination towards core research matched perfectly with the excellent coursework that the school offers. We both had read Thomas Piketty’s work during our undergrad and having the opportunity to study in his department further enhanced our vision of how much legacy this institution carries. All in all, the experience opened us up to the world and we’re so grateful we chose France.

Q: Did you learn French before coming to France? Would you advise learning French before going to France?

A: We both had very little time to learn French but we did do a short course. After coming here, even though our curriculum was in English, we realized how important it is to learn the language for cultural integration. In an international class with over 40+ nationalities, we didn’t feel the need to learn french. However, we do think it is important to learn it, at least the basics in order to be able to carry out daily activities (shopping, opening a bank account, visiting a doctor etc). Plus, learning an additional language is always ideal. You may find yourself open to more opportunities if you speak another language.

Q: What will be your advice to a student who wants to come to France for their higher studies?

A: Moving abroad is a big decision and while it deserves the attention it does, don’t limit yourself to thinking you may not be able to make it. We didn’t even think we would get in, let alone get a scholarship. If you feel you’re motivated enough to pursue the course you want to, prepare yourself for a rollercoaster ride once you get in it. You will open yourself up to the world and be ready to take on challenges! Don’t forget that a little Bonjour goes a long way…

Q: What do you expect from the France Alumni network in India?

A: Alumni networks are one of the most understated groups in institutions. During our application, we realized how important it is to be in touch with Alumni who took the same leap as you wish to. We encourage an active group where we have the opportunity to give back to prospective students by answering their questions, helping them with the application process and giving them answers to questions that a faculty member or an international relations representative may not be able to. The France Alumni network can be that platform that brings together alumni and students to promote ‘Study in France’.
