Call for entries: Thesis prize of the Diplomatic and Consular Academy of the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs

In 2025, the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs will inaugurate the first edition of the "Diplomatic Academy Thesis Prize". Each year, the prize will be awarded to young researchers whose research has a significant impact on France's diplomatic and international action.

The "Diplomatic and Consular Academy Dissertation Prize" is designed to recognize several doctoral dissertations defended between January 1, 2024 and March 31, 2025.

The thesis must have been written in French and defended in a French or foreign higher education establishment.

A prize open to a wide range of disciplines

The aim of this prize is to support and encourage university research in a wide range of disciplines, the results of which contribute to a better understanding of current social dynamics and changes (health, education, climate, biodiversity, changes in cross-border areas, scientific and technological developments, economic, social and political dynamics, etc.), which have an impact on international relations, and whose findings can be enlightening for the design and implementation of France's foreign policy. In this respect, the following scientific fields (by way of example) are particularly valued:

  • sociology ;
  • anthropology ;
  • ethnology ;
  • demography ;
  • geography ;
  • urban planning ;
  • political science ;
  • international law ;
  • economics ;
  • global issues ;
  • political philosophy ;
  • international relations;
  • languages and cultures.

Awards

The winners will receive the following prize:

  • First prize: €3,000, plus a research residency of at least 1 month in one of the 27 research centers in the network of mixed units of French research institutes abroad (Umifre).
  • Second prize: €2,000.
  • Third prize: €1,000.

The work will be promoted by the Ministry in various ways: award ceremony at the Quai d'Orsay in February 2026, communication campaigns, publications on its website. The prize is intended to help finance the publication of the thesis in the form of a manuscript for the general public.

Application dates and procedures

Applications may be submitted by midnight on June 30, 2025, as specified in the thesis prize regulations, by completing the online application form.

The selection procedure takes place in two stages:

  1. A pre-selection committee made up of diplomats from the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs will assess the contribution of the research work to the design and implementation of France's international action.
  2. From this selection, the scientific jury will choose the 3 best theses, based on their scientific quality.

Scientific Committee

The scientific selection committee is made up of qualified personalities chosen for their academic and research skills, covering all the disciplines covered by the Prize, and from which its chairman will be chosen by its members.
